After six days of gear shifting and chewing away at the 800nm course, the 2019 Cabo Race is one for the books! Spirits were high last Thursday in the Baja Cantina as the fleet was recognized for completing a very challenging edition of the race. Without further adieu, your 2019 Cabo Race trophy winners: Overall Winner & ORR-3 Winner Fast Exit - John Raymont - BYC Line Honors Good Call - Tom Barker - CRA ORR-1 Destroyer - Jim Bailey -...
Good morning! Last night saw some epic battles as the last monohulls completed their 800+nm journey. Peligroso & Pyewacket finished just before closing time at the Baja Cantina after playing the inside breeze on Tuesday payed off and shot them well ahead of the remaining Saturday boats. Just behind them, Taxi Dancer, Destroyer, Grand Illusion, & Medicine Man were knees deep in a jibing duel for the remainder of the race. Taxi Dancer took the outside Wednesday morning which seemed to give them the velocity they needed to...
The Welcoming Committee has been bouncing from boat to boat as more finishers roll in. We are now up to 16 finishers as a great 10kt breeze has filled in off of Baja California Sur, allowing boats to make up some time. Spirits were high on shore last night as Marisol, Brown Eyed Girl, & Chubasco debriefed on their extremely close race. "It was a slinky race the whole way" said Gio Morrelli of Marisol, citing that they had passed & been passed by Chubasco at least 3 different...
A huge congratulations to the Swan 60 Good Call! Sailed by skipper Tom Barker, navigator John Gladstone, David Oliver, Erik Rogers, Javier Quiroz, Jeffery Brown, Patrick Murray, Thomas Parry, & Will Suto.
The battle for line honors continues as Brown Eyed Girl, Chubasco, Good Call, & Marisol drag race down the cape. It is still a little too close to call, but one boat made a Good Call by hunting for some breeze offshore and it seems to have paid off (bet you can't guess who that is). Further north, Peligroso & Pyewacket have separated from the rest of their divisions, leading the charge for the Saturday starts. The race hasn't gone without its challenges though; Destroyer ran into a kelp minefield, OEX experienced electrical...
This edition of the Cabo Race has certainly been a roller coaster of conditions! Light breeze early on caused two boats to retire. However, it is definitely picking up; as we've seen boats log speeds up in the mid-teens, then screech to a near-halt a few hours later. Spirits are high within the fleet, two boats even reported seeing green flashes at sunset on March 17th. A festive way to celebrate St. Patrick's Day! Meanwhile, the Race Committee is on station in Cabo San...
